“My goal is to make a difference for a qualified person that does not have the financial resources to attend medical school,” says Raymond C. Truex, Jr., MD.
The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society offers a new medical student scholarship thanks to a commitment from the Truex Family Foundation. Dr. Truex explains that founding the scholarship offered him the opportunity to marry his affinity for education and the tenets of the Foundation, both dear to his heart.
“My return on investment is the pleasure of meeting the beneficiaries. I envision keeping in touch to watch while individuals succeed in their education and preparations for practicing medicine,” remarked Dr. Truex, noting that he values education, teaching, and mentorship. A formal medical professor, he earned several teaching awards including the prestigious Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching at Temple University, Philadelphia.
To honor his personal history, Dr. Truex worked with the Foundation to establish the scholarship to benefit a student enrolled at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, his alma mater. Further, he aims to channel the investment to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion at the school by seeking to support an African American student. “This population has been historically underrepresented in medicine and I want to help to change that.”
In light of the pandemic, this has been a deeply stressful time for students compounded by the effects of a public health crisis. Dr. Truex says that he notes how disruptive the pandemic has been to people in lower socioeconomic circumstances. He said that the selection committee will evaluate scholarship recipients based on financial need as well as other criteria.
“We celebrate Dr. Truex and his generosity in this inaugural year of his scholarship award,” says Foundation Executive Director Heather Wilson, MSW, CFRE, CAE, FCPP. “This bequest is part of his lasting legacy with the Foundation where he has put his heart into fulfilling others in a myriad of ways.”
